Chapter Fifteen

Be the Reminder

To think how little we actually know about the big picture at any given moment can be something so terrifying, yet when it really comes down to it, it is really invigorating.

—My Campaign Trail Journal, December 2016

During the campaign, there were terrible storms in Louisiana, and massive amounts of flooding had destroyed entire communities. We took a trip down there with Donald Trump after people had been able to get back into their homes and emergency personnel gave us the all clear to come in.

Entire homes had been cleared out. We drove down streets and saw people dragging all of their belongings out onto their driveways—couches, tables, beds, stacked high awaiting removal. Everything inside the flooded homes had been ruined.

We brought supplies and loaded trucks at a shelter before heading to a neighborhood to visit a family that had lost everything. We walked into the empty home that had been gutted and saw the lines on the walls where the water had risen. The man who owned the home told us how he had been born in the small house next door and built this house on his own. He had lived there his entire life, raised his family there, and had hoped to live there for the rest of his days. Now he wasn’t sure. They had already rebuilt the structure once and he told us he wasn’t sure if he had it in him to do it again.

Dad patted him on the back and we gave his wife a hug as she stood beside him, nodding in solemn agreement.

Donald Trump did something different, though. He looked around and surveyed the home, most likely drawing on his expertise in real estate and construction. He nodded confidently, looked right at the man, and said, “You’re going to rebuild. I can tell you’re that kind of person. You’re going to rebuild.”

The man lit up, his eyes locked on the person who would one day be his president. He nodded and continued to show us the exterior area of the house. Something in his demeanor had changed, though, and I have thought back to it many times. He had confidence and pride in this place, and it showed as he pointed out the improvements he had made to the house over time.

It was almost a year later that we heard from that family again. The man had, in fact, built a new home. Trump’s confidence in him was possibly exactly what he needed. He didn’t need us to come see his house and pity his situation. Rather, he needed someone to see through the situation to the future—to have faith in him to not give up on his dream. Life had thrown him into an unexpected spot, as it so often does. Sometimes we just need someone who is going to look us in the eye, realize our potential, and not let us forget it.

Sometimes unexpected things happen that can knock us down and take the breath out of us, knock the wind out of our sails.
